Online Safety
In today's digital world, it's important that we do everything we can
to prevent unwanted access to our online accounts and personal data.
Call me to discuss how you can improve your online security
DNS Filtering
Using a free DNS filtering service, you can instantly block access to malicious websites and adult content.
With a quick configuration change on your internet router, all of the devices connected to your home network will be automatically protected.
Specific devices can be excluded from filtering if required.
Wellbeing Limits
Limiting how much time children spend online can be tricky, but both Apple and Android devices include tools that can help enforce limits.
These settings allow you to configure scheduled times of day when internet usage is allowed, as well as setting a daily time-based limit on how many total minutes of internet use is allowed.
These features can also be useful to limit your own usage of things like Social Media.
Parental Controls
With additional software, you can add more flexible parental controls, control app access, set time usage limits and only allow age appropriate content.
Norton’s Parental Control can monitor a child’s device and send alert notifications for various scenarios such as accessing a blocked website, creating a new online account, use of a different web browser, or when time restrictions have been reached.
It also provides detailed history reporting.
Security Software
Internet security software is essential to keep you and your data safe. For the last 20 years, I’ve been using used Norton 360 both at home and with my business clients. It has always performed well and is great value for money.
Although your internet router will include a basic firewall, device based endpoint protection usually includes additional protection such as virus and malware prevention, advanced firewall, intrusion prevention, dark web monitoring, cloud backup and in some cases, a password manager.
Password Managers
Norton 360 includes a password manager, but I also use LastPass which provides a secure password vault for each member of your family.
LastPass includes a browser plugin and mobile apps to make accessing your complex passwords easy.
With a password manager, you don’t need to remember all of your passwords and therefore can greatly increase password complexity. Some of my passwords are 100 characters long!
Another great feature is that you can chose to share passwords between family members.
Multi-factor Authentication
Multi-factor Authentication, also known as Two-factor Authentication, MFA, or 2FA adds an additional level of security to your login process. This makes it much harder for hackers to access your online accounts.
As well as your username & password, a 3rd piece of information is required to complete the login process.
This can be a 6-digit code sent by Text Message to your phone, a notification to an Authenticator app, like Microsoft or Google Authenticator, or even a physical security token such as a Yubikey.
I’d recommend enabling MFA on all of your online accounts where possible.
